Young Appalachian Musician (YAM)Lessons available
for Kids and Adults at OHC
Join the Oconee Heritage Center (OHC) for the next round of evening music lessons. Our program, called Young Appalachian Musicians (YAM), is an inexpensive way to learn traditional Appalachian music. YAM is a program started initially in Pickens County as an after-school program, but is now offered in Oconee and Greenville counties. The Oconee program will be broken into six-week increments, consisting of one 45 minute group lesson per week. Local musicians will teach instruments such as guitar, fiddle, banjo, and mandolin in a group setting, depending on the student's level of experience. All teaching will be done "by ear," the traditional Appalachian way.
Students can either have their instrument approved by the instructor, or rent an instrument from YAM for only $25 per every six weeks. Each six week program will cost only $50.00, or around the cost for 1 or 2 lessons elsewhere. All lessons offered will be held in Walhalla, at the Oconee Heritage Center. Students must be 8 years or older. For more information, see this form or call Emily Hopkins at 864-638-2224.
